A. QuickTime for Windows 2.01
This IntelliMedia title uses a lot of QuickTime for Windows motion video to
illustrate the skills you need to become a better player. QuickTime for
Windows 2.01 is included in the product and will be automatically installed
with the program. If you do incur a problem with our product and do not see
it addressed below, you should consult the QuickTime for Windows 2.01 README
(which is in the QTW201 directory on the CD). This README lists Supported,
Compatible and Incompatible sound and video cards as well as other important
information. If you try to install QTW 2.01 twice, you will get a shared
file error. Just exit and restart Windows and the install will run
correctly.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
B. Running Multiple Configurations or Manually Updating Your CONFIG.SYS
Please read this area if:
You are using the Multiple Configuration feature of DOS 6.0 or higher
- or -
You would like to manually make the changes to your CONFIG.SYS required for
our IntelliMedia product to function. (Our setup software normally does this
for you and backs up your old file to CONFIG.IMS)
The Multiple Configuration feature of DOS 6.x allows you to specify multiple
startup configurations for systems with multiple users who desire different
setups or to meet your other needs that require more than one system
configuration. Your DOS users guide explains the procedures you need to
setup and manage multiple configurations. If you allow the IntelliMedia
installation software to modify your CONFIG.SYS for you, each instance of
files and buffers in your CONFIG.SYS will be modified to meet the
requirements for running your IntelliMedia title. Having this modification
made to each of your configurations may be undesirable to you, in which case
you will need to manually update your CONFIG.SYS to accommodate the
IntelliMedia software in the particular configurations you wish it to
operate under.
You can see the current state of these values and update them if necessary
with the Windows Notepad or MS-DOS's EDIT command. As a minimum these
commands should have the values of
files=50
buffers=30
to allow our software to function properly. Running a disk cache may allow
you to operate with a lower buffers value, freeing a few bytes of memory,
however we recommend in most situations you use a buffers value of 30 or
greater. Consult the documentation with your cache software for more
information on this matter.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
C. Applications Running in the Background Will Cause Problems
It is commonly known that applications such as TSRs, reminder notes, pop-up
calendars, background virus checking programs, or other such applications
that run in the background under DOS or Windows can and usually do prevent
higher-end multimedia applications from running properly. Please do not
have these applications running when you install or play this product.
Pressing CTRL+ESC will display the applications currently running in
addition to Program Manager. You may also check your WIN.INI file for the
"load= " or "run= " line to see if something is being loaded from within
Windows that is not visible in CTRL+ESC.
Do not run Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Works with our program. They will
interfere with the display drivers. We have also found Microsoft Office to
cause problems, but this is less frequent. We suggest you run our
application by itself.
Desktop shells like Norton Desktop, PC Tools Desktop, DashBoard, etc. are a
common source of errors for both Windows Setup and application setups. Icon
and Group window creation commands are not always properly handled by these
shells. Using the Program Manager shell when you are installing an
application is always a good idea.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
D. Packard Bell Computers
Some Packard Bell computers are known to play our QuickTime movies
improperly. (You see stretched video or video shifted outside of the
viewing frame.)
Solutions:
a) If you have the Headland video board/graphic chip set, then add the
following two lines at the end of the QTW.INI file in your Windows
directory:
optimize=BMP
A suitable editor for this task is the Windows Notepad or MS-DOS EDIT.
If you don't add these lines to the QTW.INI file, you'll see stretched
movies playing.
b) Get the latest video drivers for your video card. Most of the time this
will solve almost any movie playing problem for a Packard Bell computer
system. You can contact Packard Bell support at 1-800-733-4411.

E. Driver File Information
Please note:
Multimedia products such as ours use many of the resources of a PC computer
to their fullest. You may wish to contact the vendors of your video card,
CD-ROM drive, or sound board for the latest driver files. MOST OF THE
TECHNICAL PROBLEMS YOU ENCOUNTER ARE DUE TO OUTDATED DEVICE DRIVERS. This
really is true -- even for new computer systems! The first thing you should
do is get and/or confirm that you have the latest driver for both your video
and sound card.

F. Interrupt & DMA Settings
One of the major difficulties people have when installing a sound card
and/or CD-ROM drive are conflicts with interrupts (IRQ) or Direct Memory
Access (DMA). We have included a list of symptoms to help you resolve
potential problems with new sound cards or CD-ROM drives.
Symptoms of an interrupt conflict are:
a) sound skips like a broken record
b) a small portion of music plays and your computer locks up
Symptoms of a DMA conflict are:
a) you get no sound
b) you hear a loud hissing
c) your computer locks up
Your hardware vendors can help you resolve these problems.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
G. Testing CD-ROM Transfer Rate
We normally include a file called xfr_rate.bat on our CD-ROM. If necessary,
you may run this file to check the data transfer rate of your CD-ROM drive.
Exit Windows, change to your CD-ROM drive, then type XFR_RATE.BAT.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
H. Image Quality
Our movies are designed to give you higher quality video with cards capable
of displaying 65,000 colors and above. In fact, we have captured these
movies in 16.8 million colors to take full advantage of newer video color
capabilities.
In some rare instances, you may have no choice but to set your video card to
display 256 colors. Not all high color video cards work properly with our
software at 65,000 colors or higher. Once again, you may only need to
obtain the latest video drivers to correct this. See phone numbers in
"driver files" section of this document.
We do recommend using a resolution of 640x480. Higher resolutions may not
work properly, the problems vary between video card manufacturers.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
I. Some 486 25MHz Computers with Only 4 MB of Memory
If your computer is a 25MHz machine with 4MB of memory and you experience
poor video playback, we have some helpful suggestions:
a) Set your video card to 256 colors. This may be done either with
software provided with your video card or by installing a new video driver.
The documentation included with your video card should be able to assist you
in this procedure. Should you install a new video driver, a 256 color
driver will be identified by a 256 in the last position of the triad of
numbers which describe the drivers display properties, i.e., 640X480X256.
b) Please be sure you are using a permanent swap file in Windows! See your
Windows manual for more information about this.
c) Consider upgrading to DOS 6.2. One of the enhancements in 6.2 is that
Smartdrv can now cache the CD-ROM drive to speed things up. You must load
MSCDEX before Smartdrv in your autoexec.bat file to enable this feature.
d) Load device drivers into high memory to help free up conventional
memory. Your DOS manual can help you figure out how to do this.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
J. Trident Video Cards
If you have a Trident Video Card you may get a low memory message. If you
do, reduce your number of colors to 256 or try 64,000. The documentation
with your Trident card should be able to assist you.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
K. ATI Video Cards
If you have an ATI MACH 64 then you definitely need to set DEVICEBITMAP=OFF
in your [MACX] section of your system.ini file. Look at your MACH64.WRI
file located in your MACH64\ATIDESK directory for more details.
Other ATI cards may also need to have DEVICEBITMAP set to OFF. If after
playing a movie your machine locks up or you get an error, you may need to
contact ATI about a newer video driver or configuration change. The phone
number to ATI is (416) 756-0711.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
L. Error 6
There are usually two reasons for an 'Error 6':
1. You may have older version of QuickTime for Windows in your
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. These files were placed in that directory by
a previous product. Re-install QuickTime for Windows 2.01 following the
IntelliMedia installation procedures, answering "Yes" to any prompts for
removal of older versions.
2. The second reason is that your sound drivers are not properly loaded.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
M. Cannot Copy ver.dl, ver.dl_, or ver.dll
Microsoft changed the date of this .dll file. If you get a 'Cannot copy
ver... file' error, then note the file name it cannot copy, then move that
file out of the Windows directory. Then retry the install process.
To move the ver... file:
- We will use the ver.dl file for this example. To move the other
files, change the file name as appropriate.
- From the DOS prompt, change to the Windows directory. For example,
if on your system Windows is stored in the directory \WINDOWS, to
perform this operation you would type CD \WINDOWS
- When in the Windows directory, type MOVE VER.DL \ . The VER.DL file
will now reside in your root directory (the top-most directory).
Should you wish to move the file elsewhere, you may do so by
appending the directory name to the \ without any spaces.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
N. 'Segment Load' or 'Out of Memory' Errors
If you receive one of these errors while running one of our products under
Windows for Workgroups 3.11, turning 32-bit File Access ON may correct the
problem.
To turn ON 32-bit File access:
- From the Control Panel window choose the Enhanced icon.
- The Enhanced window will be displayed. Choose the Virtual Memory
button.
- Choose the 'Change>>' button from the Virtual Memory window that
appears.
- Select the 32-bit File Access option. (An 'X' will appear in the box
next to the option when active.)
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
O. QTMOVIE.VBX Error
This error will only occur if you are trying to run our Lower Your Score
with Tom Kite: Shot Making version 1.0 or Baseball: Hitting after you have
installed one of our newer products which utilizes QuickTime for Windows
2.01.
To fix this:
- Insert the 'Shot Making' (Disc 2) or the 'Hitting' disc
- Go to File Manager and open your hard drive (typically C:) and your
CD-ROM drive (typically D:)
- On the CD drive (D:), double-click the 'setupdr' directory and find
the file 'qtmovie.vbx'
- Click and drag this file to your hard-drive (C:) and drop it into the
'IMS' directory
- Click 'Yes' to the message, "Are you sure...?". It will copy the
file.
- Close File Manager and 'Shot Making' or 'Hitting' should now work.
òòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòòò
P. Printing Problems
If you are having printing problems with one of our titles that supports
this option, the following procedure will ensure that the problem is
isolated to our product:
- If you are viewing this document under Window's Write or Notepad
applets, choose File from the menu bar and select Print.
- If you receive an error, your printer may not be connected properly
or your printer driver may not be installed properly, or not
selected. Consult the documentation for your printer and computer
system.
- If your printer connection and setup are OK, the next step is to
ensure that you have the latest printer driver from the manufacturer
of your printer. You may need to call them to obtain information on
the latest printer driver available for your type printer.
